COMMERCIAL & INDUSTRIAL RADIANT DEFENSE

CONTROL RADIANT HEAT. PROTECT YOUR BUILDING.

Large commercial and industrial buildings can absorb enormous amounts of solar energy through their roofs and exterior surfaces. Metal warehouses, shops, storage facilities, and other large structures can become extremely hot long before the workday is over.

Area 361 Radiant Defense provides professional spray-applied radiant barrier systems designed to reduce unwanted radiant heat transfer and help create a more manageable interior environment.

Our systems can be applied to existing buildings as well as new construction, depending on the substrate and application.

THE ROOF IS A MAJOR SOURCE OF HEAT GAIN

A commercial roof exposed to direct sunlight can become significantly hotter than the space below it.

That heat is transferred through the building by conduction, convection, and radiation. Radiant barrier systems specifically address the radiant component of heat transfer.

BUILDING INTERIOR

RADIANT DEFENSE creates a low-emissivity, reflective surface that helps reduce radiant heat transfer from the heated roof toward cooler interior surfaces.

Potential interior temperature reductions of approximately 10–25°F+, depending on building characteristics and conditions.

Results vary based on building design, climate, roof material, insulation, ventilation, HVAC systems, application, and other conditions.

WHAT COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS CAN BENEFIT?

Our commercial applications can include:

WAREHOUSES

Large roof areas can create significant heat loads. Radiant Defense can help reduce radiant heat entering occupied or storage areas.

MANUFACTURING FACILITIES

Help create a more manageable environment for employees and equipment in large industrial spaces.

METAL BUILDINGS

Metal roofs and walls exposed to direct sunlight can absorb substantial heat. Appropriate interior or exterior applications can help address that heat load.

COMMERCIAL SHOPS

Automotive shops, fabrication facilities, repair shops, and maintenance buildings can benefit from reducing radiant heat from overhead surfaces.

STORAGE FACILITIES

Help reduce heat transfer in storage buildings where maintaining a more moderate interior environment is important.

DISTRIBUTION & LOGISTICS

Large roof decks and loading areas can contribute significant heat gain. Radiant barrier applications can help address these high-exposure surfaces.

GARAGES & VEHICLE FACILITIES

Help reduce radiant heat from roofs and, where appropriate, exposed metal walls and doors.

OFFICE & OCCUPIED SPACES

For buildings with offices beneath or adjacent to hot roof areas, reducing radiant heat can improve comfort and potentially reduce cooling demand.

ARENAS & LARGE-SPAN STRUCTURES

Radiant barrier coatings can be used on appropriate large-span roof decking and interior surfaces. The manufacturer documents commercial applications including arenas and ice rinks.

EXISTING BUILDINGS DON’T HAVE TO BE REBUILT

RETROFIT YOUR EXISTING STRUCTURE

One of the biggest advantages of a spray-applied radiant barrier is the ability to treat an existing building.

Depending on the structure, the coating can be applied to accessible interior roof decking, rafters, sidewalls, or appropriate exterior roofing surfaces.

This can provide an alternative to installing traditional foil-type radiant barriers, particularly where installing a separate membrane would be difficult.

NO MAJOR REBUILD REQUIRED

We evaluate the existing structure and determine whether the accessible surfaces are appropriate for application.

INTERIOR COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS

For buildings where the underside of the roof is accessible, radiant barrier coating can be applied directly to appropriate interior surfaces.

COMMON INTERIOR SURFACES

Metal Roof Decking

Plywood

OSB

Rafters

Uninsulated Sidewalls

Gable Ends

Interior Metal Panels

Certain Ceiling Surfaces

Wood, plasterboard, painted metal roof decking and other common building materials with potential substrates, provided they are appropriately prepared and compatible.

EXTERIOR COMMERCIAL ROOF APPLICATIONS

When the underside of a roof isn’t accessible—or when the goal is to address solar heat at the roof itself—an exterior radiant barrier roof coating may be appropriate.

POTENTIAL ROOF TYPES INCLUDE:

METAL ROOFS

Galvanized steel

Galvalume

Painted metal

Other compatible metal roofing

LOW-SLOPE / FLAT ROOFS

Built-up roofing

Modified bitumen

Tar & gravel

EPDM/rubber

Certain single-ply systems

OTHER ROOFING SYSTEMS

Asphalt-based roofing

Certain foam roofs

Other compatible roofing substrates

Our product can be used on a broad range of exterior roofing substrates, with compatibility evaluation recommended for certain materials such as foam and existing coatings.

WHY COMMERCIAL BUILDING OWNERS CONSIDER RADIANT DEFENSE

COMFORT

Reducing radiant heat from overhead surfaces can make occupied spaces more comfortable.

COOLING LOAD

A lower interior heat load may reduce the amount of work required from air-conditioning systems.

The manufacturer reports potential A/C savings of up to 15% or more in some applications, but actual savings vary significantly by building and operating conditions.

EXISTING INSULATION

Radiant barrier and insulation address different heat-transfer mechanisms. A radiant barrier can complement existing insulation rather than requiring its removal.

ROOF PROTECTION

For exterior applications, high reflectivity can reduce roof-skin temperatures, while low emissivity can reduce the rate at which the roof radiates heat toward the interior. The manufacturer states this combination can reduce thermal expansion/contraction stress.

RETROFIT POTENTIAL

An existing building may be treated without replacing the entire roof system, provided the substrate and condition are appropriate.

RADIANT BARRIER IS NOT INSULATION - THEY DO DIFFERENT JOBS.

INSULATION

Primarily slows conductive and convective heat transfer.

RADIANT BARRIER

Targets radiant heat transfer across an airspace.

That means Radiant Defense can be used alongside an existing insulation system as part of a broader building heat-management strategy.

Radiant barriers do not have a conventional R-value; R-value applies to insulation systems that address other modes of heat transfer.
